Serena Williams' husband smugly brags about Caitlin Clark: What did he say?
Serena Williams' husband, Alexis Ohanian, feels he was right for his call about the Iowa Hawkeyes' Caitlin Clark after she broke the record for the most-expensive women's basketball card of all-time.
Clark is a highly rated NCAA prospect competing against Angel Reese's LSU Tigers and she firmly holds her own in the role of point guard, producing fantastic stats in the 2023/24 season.
So far, she has averaged 31 points per game, 7.2 rebounds per game and 7.7 assists per game and that has earned her a collaboration with Topps. The sports card manufacturer auctioned a 2022 signed Bowman U Basketball card by Clark, which has hit bidding over $21,500.
It's something that Ohanian clearly expected as he took to X.com, formerly Twitter, to gloat about being right on a post by @ericwhiteback. There, Ohanian simply wrote, "tried telling y'all," with a goofy emoji.
Clark's insane popularity
The most interesting part about her sports card success is that she has almost doubled the record set by Sabrina Ionescu and that bidding isn't even over yet. There's still five more days to see just how much she can attract.
But then again, is it really that surprising? Her effect and draw are no secret as she regularly gets people into the seats ahead of NCAAW matches according to Vivid Seats, a ticket sales platform.
They say that prices for Hawkeyes games have increased by 162% and since Clark joined them in 2020, they've rose 207%.
The upcoming match against the Ohio State Buckeyes, the 15th seed, is sold out. Officially, 18,660 fans will turn up to watch Clark's latest performance in her dominant season continue and it will break the 2005 record attendance of 17,525.
Clark hasn't let it go to her head and she still finds time to hang out with fans, especially the younger generations.
"Usually they don't say much, because I think they're in a little bit of shock," Clark said to media, of young fans she meets. "That girl had my jersey on, it was cute.
"She was, like, copying our stretching warming up. I thought it was adorable. She was doing leg swings when we were doing leg swings."
