LeBron's first words as Lakers win initial NBA Cup: 'This will never be topped'
The Los Angeles Lakers are the first ever In-Season Tournament champions after defeating the Indiana Pacers (123-109) in Las Vegas. LeBron James' first words after the feat said it all: "We made history. And any time if you're on the right side of history, you take it. The first ever In-Season Tournament goes to the Lakers. That will never be topped."
Not to mention, it's LeBron James himself (the oldest active player in the NBA) who was officially named MVP of the tournament.
NBA In-Season Tournament: final didn't count for standings
It was the only game in the In-Season Tournament that didn't count for the standings, but there was plenty on the line: a title, making history and, of course, the $500K individual prize for each winner.
Anthony Davis had a monster game with season highs of 41 points and 20 rebounds on Saturday night. Austin Reaves added 28, and tournament MVP LeBron James had 24 points and 11 rebounds.
The historic trophy is another for James, who has four NBA championships, and made it clear he wanted to add the Cup to his tournament.
The Pacers put up a valiant effort, with Tyrese Haliburton adding 20 points and 11 assists for Indiana, Bennedict Mathurin scoring 20 points and Aaron Nesmith with 15.
The Lakers will have a short time to celebrate, as they prepare to take on Dallas on Tuesday night and begin a three-game Texas road-trip.
