Lakers HC Darvin Ham adds pressure on Anthony Davis to win DPOY award
Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham has added unnecessary pressure on big man Anthony Davis to win the Defensive Player of the Year award in the 2023-24 NBA season after his Saturday comments went viral.
Mike Trudell, arguably the best Lakers reporter, took to Twitter to disclose Ham's comments about Davis being a candidate for the DPOY award this year.
"He's everything. He's been elite," Ham said, per Trudell. "I don't think it's appreciated enough or highlighted enough. We're nothing defensively without him."
While Ham's comments are clearly coming from a place of love, respect and admiration, it only adds extra pressure on Davis to perform, which could be a good thing.
Anthony Davis is the best NBA defender
Davis is arguably the best defender in the NBA and has been so for the past few seasons, but his issue is lack of consistency.
Perhaps Ham is adding pressure early on to keep Davis consistent amid the team's struggles following a dominant performance to win the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament.
The only players who have a shot at beating Davis for DPOY if he remains healthy are Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez of the Milwaukee Bucks.
