Goran Dragic announces his retirement after 15 NBA seasons
Goran Dragic, a former NBA All-Star, has officially decided to hang up his basketball sneakers, bringing to a close a remarkable 15-season career that spanned across seven different teams.
The Slovenian point guard achieved prominence during his tenure with the Miami Heat from 2015 to 2021, a period that included his sole All-Star selection in the 2017-18 season.
However, his impact on the court extends beyond his time in Miami. Notably, Dragic earned recognition as the NBA's Most Improved Player and secured a spot on the All-NBA third team while playing for the Phoenix Suns during the 2013-14 campaign.
What was Dragic's NBA career like?
Over the course of his illustrious career, Dragic participated in 946 games, with 530 of them as a starter, spanning from 2008 to 2023.
His stat line reflects his versatility, averaging 13.3 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.0 rebounds. Dragic's journey took him through several NBA franchises, including the Suns, Houston Rockets, Heat, Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, and Milwaukee Bucks.
Despite his numerous accomplishments, Dragic fell short of capturing an NBA championship, coming closest in the 2020 NBA Finals during the unprecedented bubble season in Orlando.
His Heat reached the Finals but succumbed to the Los Angeles Lakers in a six-game series, and he would then depart the team.
As he transitions into retirement, Dragic is not bidding farewell without a final act. Reports from his native Slovenia indicate that the 37-year-old plans to host a farewell game in August, providing fans with an opportunity to celebrate his storied career on the court.
Beyond the NBA, Dragic significantly contributed to international basketball success, leading Slovenia to victory in the 2017 FIBA EuroBasket championship. His stellar performance during the tournament earned him the prestigious MVP honors, further solidifying his legacy both domestically and on the global basketball stage.
