Club America celebrates 14th league title with historic friendly win over Barcelona
Club America defeated FC Barcelona by a score of 3-2 on Thursday at Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, a historic victory, which seemingly adds insult to injury for the reigning LaLiga champions amid a poor 2023-24 season.
America won their 14th domestic league title on Sunday after defeating Tigres at the legendary Azteca Stadium. They postponed vacation a few more days after winning the Apertura 2023 Liga MX tournament to face Xavi Hernandez's Barcelona.
Julian Quinones tied the score for America at one apiece in the 12th minute of the first half. He bagged his brace to equalize the score once again five minutes into the second frame.
Henry Martin scored the game-winner in the 82nd minute, while Lamine Yamal and Marc Guiu were the goalscorer for Barcelona.
Another win for America over Barcelona
The two teams have played each other several times in the last 20 years, but America has rarely ever come out on top.
In 2003, Barcelona visited America for a farewell of the Mexican club's top goalscorer, Luis Roberto Alves "Zague," which ended in a 2-0 win for the yellow team.
Losing to America adds insult to injury for Barcelona amid a disastrous 2023-24 season that has Xavi in the hot seat.
Former Barcelona defender and legendary Mexican star, Rafael Marquez, is currently in charge of FC Barcelona Atletic and could replace Xavi.
