France makes history: Smashes Gibraltar 14-0 with an unreal Kylian Mbappe

The France National Football Team keeps on proving they have one of the most prolific generations in international soccer history. On Saturday evening, they played the Gibraltar National Team in an Euro 2024 qualifier. Initially, there were hopes that France would still win this game but not in the explosive manner that they did. Perhaps the key to this end result was what happened in the first 20 minutes of the game and the role that defender Ethan James Santos played in this game.

An early Gibraltar own goal

Olympique Marseille right back Jonathan Klauss became an absolute headache for the Gibraltar defender in the first two minutes of the game. A clinical cross from the right forced Santos to score an own goal and give France the early lead. Two minutes before the 20th minute, Santos lost his mind and got a red card when France was already 3-0. Just a minute after the first goal, Marcus Thuram tapped the ball in the back of the net after the keeper rejected an attempt from Griezmann. Then came the first historic moment as 17-year-ol Warren Zaïre-Emery became the youngest scorer in France's history. He scored after Coman assisted him from the right flank. In the same play of Zaire's goel, Santos did a nasty tackle on the kid that was reviewed by VAR and got him kicked out of the game.

Kylian Mbappe takes over the game

About half an hour into the game, a handball gave Kylian Mbappe the chance to get in that scoreboard and he didn't disappoint from the spot. VAR helped the ref double check that handball inside Gibraltar's box in order to call that penalty kick. From that moment forward, the PSG star took over and delivered one of the most dominant performances we've seen from him since the World Cup final that he lost to Argentina. Four minutes after his goal, he assisted Klauss for France's fifth goal of the evening. A shot from outside of the box that the goalie wasn't able to see.

Kingsley Coman got in on the action two minutes later and Fofana got another assist from Mbappe before half time. But that was only half of the goals we would see from Franace this evening. There was still a full on show coming from Les Bleus with Mbappe and Giroud as the main protagonists.

Mbappe and Giroud get a brace each in the second half

After the break, Adrien Rabiot got the 8th goal nearly 20 minutes after the whistle and Coman got his brace. Dembele scored his goal less than 10 minutes after coming on the pitch but we were still four goals short of the 14 they scored. The Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud started with a tap-in from Kylian and a brilliant long range goal that sealed his hat-trick. With his performance, Mbappe reached 300 career goals and 143 assists. Not too shabby for the 24-year-old. But striker Olivier Giruoud didn't want Mbappe to completely steal the show. He scored his own brace to secure the historic 14-0 win for France, the greatest in the country's history. One of those goals was a Giroud-special bicycle kick goal that only added more insult to injury.
