Commanders show no guts to end regulation; Eagles claim OT victory
The Philadelphia Eagles (4-0) defeated the Washington Commanders (2-2) in overtime with a walkoff field goal by kicker Jake Elliott on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field for Week 4 of the 2023 NFL season.
Washington tied the game at 31 points apiece at the end of regulation with a FG, but could have had the opportunity to win if they attempted a two-point conversion. The touchdown that got the Commanders to that point came with one second remaining in the final frame of action, so they had the momentum on their side.
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera entered the season in hot water under the team's new ownership and decisions such as settling for overtime, instead of going for the win, will worsen his status.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns on 25-for-37 completed passes. The defense, however, struggled in the first half.
The opening quarter ended tied at seven and Washington led 17-10 at halftime, but the Eagles defense held them to a scoreless third stanza to head into the final frame up by four points.
Overtime woes for Commanders
Commanders QB Sam Howell threw for 290 yards and a touchdown on 29-for-41 completions. Neither quarterback recorded an interception.
Howell, 23, was unable to lead the Commanders to a touchdown drive in overtime despite winning the coin toss to go first on offense.
Hurts, 25, then moved the chains enough to set up the walkoff field goal by Elliott and to remain as one of the only two undefeated teams in the league.
Eagles visit the Los Angeles Rams next Sunday and the Commanders host the struggling Chicago Bears.
