Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) defeated Jermell "Iron Man" Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) via unanimous decision Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to remain the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world
Alvarez, 33, now has a 4-0 record when fighting for the undisputed super middleweight championship. The four-division champ made his 24th world title appearance.
Charlo, 33, went up two weight divisions to fight Canelo. He entered the contest with a 7-1-1 in world title fights.
One judge scored the fight 119-108 in favor of Canelo and the other two 118-109 for the Mexican boxer.
Referee Harvey Dock did an excellent job keeping the fighters apart, with Charlo's gameplan seemingly involving hugging Canelo.
Canelo Alvarez walks Jermell Charlo
The Mexican fighter, on the other hand, focused on body shots and power punches, almost never using the jab.
Canelo was hounding Charlo from the start and was the aggressor all night long, eventually dropping the American fighter in the seventh round.
Charlo took a second to drop to his knee, but it was a smart move to go down because Canelo would have taked advantage of him being hurt.
Alvarez never sat down between rounds and looked spry up until the final bell. He kept Charlo on his heels throughout the entire fight.
Canelo Alvarez shows respect for Jermell Charlo
Charlo respected Canelo too much during the fight and the Mexican star did not look afraid whatsoever. In fact, he was calm, cool, collected and in control.
When Charlo finally let his hands go a bit in the final four rounds, it was too little too late, as Canelo had won nearly every round before then.
After the fight, during his postgame interview, Canelo showed respect for Charlo by calling him a "great fighter."
Canelo also said he doesn't "give a f---" who he fights next, which will be on May 5, and David Benavidez seems as the main option.
