Lionel Messi's next game in Leagues Cup set after Charlotte FC's comical comeback
Lionel Messi will lead Inter Miami CF against Charlotte FC in the quarter-finals stage of the Leagues Cup after the latter pulled off a comical comeback victory over Houston Dynamo in one minute down the final stretch of the game Monday night at Shell Energy Stadium.
Two costly mistakes by Houston saw Miami win 2-1 after trailing by the smallest of margins for most of the night. Both errors could be attributed to Dynamo goalkeeper Steve Clark.
Corey Baird opened the score for Houston 10 minutes into the game. A poor run to the ball by Clark in the 80th minute saw Patrick Agyemang net the equalizer.
Right after resuming play from the midfield spot, Micael scored an own goal from outside the box, leaving Clark looking foolish.
While the Brazilian defender deserves a share of the blame, Clark did not dive at the ball, instead attempting to slide. If the referee would have called a foul due to his teammate passing him the ball, the free kick would have been from outside the box.
When is Messi's next game in Leagues Cup?
Thanks to the miraculous, and hilarious comeback, Charlotte will visit Messi and Co. on Friday, August 11 at DRV PNK Stadium. Kickoff time is to be determined.
Messi, 36, is coming off an incredible brace to lead his side past FC Dallas in a penalty shootout after an epic 4-4 draw in the Round of 16.
His amazing form will likely continue against a Charlotte squad that must understand they are fortunate to be alive.
Messi looks to continue to add to his MLS tally, which is currently at seven goals and counting.
