Brock Purdy proves his worth as 49ers QB with rushing TD after Trey Lance trade
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy once again proved his worth with a rushing touchdown in a 23-12 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at Levi's Stadium on Friday night, hours after the front office traded Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys.
Purdy, 23, played a few snaps in the final preseason contest and finished his night with 73 passing yards on 5-for-9 completions. He also rushed for a five-yard TD to end the drive.
Sam Darnold then took the reigns of the offense and managed to throw for 89 yards and a touchdown on 6-for-11 completed passes.
Darnold, 26, joined the 49ers this offseason and beat out Lance for the backup quarterback position.
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan gave up three first-round draft picks to select Lance third overall in 2021. The 23-year-old QB is now the third-string option for Dallas behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.
Chargers RB Joshua Kelley rushes for 75-yard TD
Following Purdy's rushing touchdown, Chargers running back Joshua Kelley one-upped him, which also regained the lead for LA.
Kelley, 25, found a gap and took off running, leaving the San Francisco defense in the dust.
Chargers held the 49ers scoreless in the second and fourth quarters. Niners QB3 Brandon Allen threw an interception that iced the game.
San Francisco play its NFL season opener at Pittsburgh Steelers on September 10 and LA host the Miami Dolphins.
