Travis Kelce finally beats Patrick Mahomes in golf, Canelo Alvarez tags along
Kansas City Chiefs teammates Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were paired alongside boxing champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez for the first round of the 2023 American Century Celebrity Golf Championship Tournament.
Kelce, 33, gave an interview to McKenzie Nelson of NBC after the celebrity golf tournament's opening round and bragged about finally beating Mahomes. He also went on to praise Alvarez despite having a rough outing.
"Canelo is awesome," Kelce said. "He's such an unbelievable athlete. To be able to do what he does in the ring and then come out here and be smooth as can be, hit a bunch of unbelievable golf shots.
"I have so much respect for who he is as a person and who he is as an athlete, so it was fun playing Canelo. At the same time, he hit a few good shots, but he wasn't himself today."
Mahomes, 27, had a poor round, which Kelce credits for him coming out on top Friday, but the tournament continues over the weekend with two more rounds.
Canelo Alvarez admits it wasn't his day
Kelce was beating around the bush when talking about Canelo's poor performance, but the Mexican boxer himself admitted to coming up short via Instagram.
"Round 1 didn't went like expected, but I'm ready for tomorrow," Canelo captioned his IG post. "Thanks to everyone who came!"
Four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry leads the board through the first round, while Canelo finished in 57 of 90 positions.
Canelo, 32, is currently preparing to face Jermell Charlo in September, leading to boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya criticizing him for playing golf.
Mahomes and Kelce go from friends to foes
Mahomes and Kelce are coming off a victory in Capital One's The Match over Golden State Warriors teammates Curry and Klay Thompson.
The Chiefs teammates are now participating in another celebrity golf tournament, but this time against one another.
There is still plenty of golf remaining Saturday and Sunday, so Mahomes might still get the last laugh.
When it comes down to it, though, a win is the only acceptable outcome for Mahomes, Kelce and Canelo. Curry, meanwhile, is hitting incredible shots.
