'That's karma': Matt Miazga slammed on air by US Soccer legend Landon Donovan
The U.S. Men's National Team couldn't secure a defense of their Gold Cup title, as they fell to Panama in a penalty shootout during Wednesday's semifinal match.
The USMNT's uninspiring performance led to a loss that U.S. Soccer legend, Landon Donovan, attributed to Matt Miazga's conduct during the shootout. After scoring his penalty, Miazga confronted the next Panamanian player due for a spot kick, getting in his face and trading harsh words.
Speaking on FS1 post-game, Donovan stated, "Karma finds you out. There's a line you don't cross in terms of sportsmanship." This isn't the first time Miazga's behavior on the pitch, while representing the U.S., has attracted criticism.
In a friendly match between the United States and Mexico in September 2018, Miazga and Mexican forward Diego Lainez were embroiled in a minor flare-up. Following a challenge for the ball, Miazga, significantly taller than Lainez, mocked the Mexican player's height. The incident, while seen by some as a humorous display of rivalry, was largely regarded as unsporting behavior, igniting extensive media coverage and fan reaction.
Miazga isn't the sole target of criticism, though, as disappointment is mounting over the team's lethargic showing and overall subpar performance. The after-taste being especially bitter given the USMNT's perennial status as Gold Cup favorites.
Panama is now advancing to its first Gold Cup final since 2013. As for the USMNT, their next matches are scheduled for September, under the resumed leadership of Head Coach Gregg Berhalter.
