Jayson Tatum is clear on who the NBA's best players will be next: Is there a surprise?
LeBron James has been the NBA for the last 15 years, at least, and there has been a shorter period where he has been joined by Steph Curry at the top of the mountain.
Yet, as we move into the 2023 season, James is no longer the best performer in the NBA and he is never going to return to his best levels.
Thus, the new era of the NBA is upon us and it could well be any of several players who mark the new era for the league.
We have Luka Doncic, Zion Williamson and the newly-drafted Victor Wembanyama, whilst there is also Jayson Tatum with the Boston Celtics.
Tatum himself has been discussing this topic and he firmly believes that he will be in contention for the consensus best player in the league.
"You got guys like me, Luka [Doncic], Jaylen Brown, Donovan Mitchell," he explained to Ball Don't Lie.
"The league is in great hands. So many talented guys.
"Embiid, Jokic and Giannis, they're still kinda young I guess."
Tatum is ready to bounce back from finals disappointment
Having been so close to an NBA championship, Tatum is ready to launch another assault on the championship in 2023.
The Celtics roster remains rather strong, despite missing out on the finals in 2022, but with Tatum controlling the ship there is nothing that is beyond that team.
The addition of Kristaps Porzingis via a three-team trade has the potential to give the team a new dynamic on offense and defense, although there are serious concerns that the balance of the team has been damaged with the departure of defensive leader, Marcus Smart.
Tatum will need to develop an on-court rapport with Porzingis. At his best, the Latvian was a potential all-star, and if he can return to those levels, his physical presence alongside the genius of Tatum could make the duo one of the best one-two combinations in the NBA.
