Red Bull: Checo Perez can't make any more mistakes
Sergio Perez's 2023 Monaco F1 Grand Prix was one to forget. He arrived in the Principality 14 points behind Max Verstappen and dropped to 39 because of his failure to score and the Dutchman's 25 points for winning.
Logically, everything was influenced by his accident on Saturday, which forced him to start last on the grid in the narrow streets of Monaco. In the race, he was also unable to make up the numbers, partly due to a collision with George Russell. He had been the 'king of the street circuits' in previous races, but Monte Carlo was his nightmare.
The Mexican driver himself was unequivocal about it. "I am the only one responsible. I can't make any more mistakes if I want to fight for the World Championship," Perez declared.
But if he needs more, that's what Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko is there for.
"His race was an impossibility. After the incident, it didn't matter anymore. Everything went wrong, but I hope Sunday's mistakes are enough for the rest of the season," Marko told Servus TV.
"In general, his speed when he was alone was good. But the incident ruined the whole weekend.
"It wasn't irresponsible, but it was irrational. The numbers speak for themselves: last on the grid, a broken wing, 16th place, two laps down and five pit stops."
Praise for Verstappen
By contrast, Marko had only words of praise for Verstappen for his victory in Monte Carlo.
"His lap in qualifying was unbelievable. Incredible performance. He was always in control in all conditions. He controlled the pace with ease. The communication between Max and the technicians was excellent. He touched the wall, but it went well," he concluded.
