Aaron Rodgers could wear Joe Namath's iconic 12 jersey if plays for New York Jets
In the history of the NFL, there is a jersey number that is associated with great legends, particularly at the quarterback position, as it was worn by legends such as Terry Bradshaw, Bob Griese, Ken Stabler, Roger Staubach and even Tom Brady, all of them Super Bowl winners.
One of those legends is Joe Namath, the New York Jets QB who gave them their only championship and who also wore number 12, which was retired by the team in 1985.
Namath would make an exception for Rodgers
Of the current QBs, Brady and Aaron Rodgers are two who wear it proudly and have won the Super Bowl with that number. So now that rumors have swirled that Rodgers could leave the Green Bay Packers and that one of the teams that want him on their roster is the Jets, Namath made him a special offer.
The Jets believe Rodgers could lead them to that coveted second title, so Broadway Joe said that if Aaron plays for the Jets, he would allow him to bring his iconic number 12 out of retirement for him to wear in the green and white uniform as well.
In his recent appearance on the "Tiki & Tierney" show, Namath said he would allow Rodgers to wear his number if he brought his talent to the team:
"I hope it can become a reality, but it's far-fetched: I know Mr. Woody Johnson is trying to get a quarterback. If there's any way he can get Rodgers... I'm a big Rodgers fan, and I noticed he wears No. 12, of course. Man, if we get him, will he still be wearing number 12? Because that number was retired years ago...".
The decision would be in the hands of Broadway Joe
"Well, it depends on the ownership. It's different ownership. Different people. And I'd love to have Rodgers there," Namath said. "Yes, I want him to wear his number. We've established ourselves and have a real respect for our numbers, and Aaron Rodgers, God almighty, yes! It would be great to have him in New York."
Rodgers looks favorably on a team change, so he's likely to decide on one before free agency begins in March, and the Jets are one of the possible destinations for the still-Packers QB.
