Grant Wahl had planned to attend England-France game, FIFA didn't forget
FIFA paid tribute to the memory of Grant Wahl on Saturday by placing a bouquet of white flowers where he would have been sitting to cover the England-France game.
The American journalist died on Friday in Qatar during the match between Netherlands and Argentina.
A photograph taken of Wahl a few days prior was placed next to the roses in his designated spot.
Wahl, who wrote for Sports Illustrated before going independent, was one of the most-recognized US soccer journalists.
He reportedly collapsed in the media section at Lusail Stadium on Friday.
Grant Wahl said he 'probably' had bronchitis
A few days earlier, Wahl wrote that he had been struggling with chest pain, saying that he visited a medical clinic and was told he "probably" had bronchitis.
Wahl noted that he tested negative for COVID-19 and said he was prescribed antiobiotics, as well as cough syrup.
Despite not feeling entirely well, Wahl was still planning to attend the England-France clash.
Wahl had recently been recognized for covering his eighth FIFA World Cup.
