Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro link to give Manchester United victory over Everton
Manchester United kept the pressure on the top four in the Premier League thanks to a convincing 2-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park.
The visitors bounced back from the 6-3 Manchester derby defeat last weekend by coming from behind against Frank Lampard and his Toffees.
Everton took the lead
Erik ten Hag's team had to do things the hard way after going behind in just the first five minutes when Alex Iwobi opened the scoring for the Toffees.
The former Arsenal man received the ball 20 yards out, took one touch and set a brilliant effort past the sprawling David de Gea who could do little to stop the strike.
An early change
In the warm-up before the match, Anthony Martial had pulled up and headed down the tunnel before the rest of his teammates holding onto his hip, but the decision was made for him to start.
It looked an inspired decision as it was Martial who threaded through a perfectly-weighted pass for Antony to run onto and score his third goal in as many games with a bending finish.
However, Martial's joy was short-lived as he was forced off only 14 minutes later as he struggled with the injury he picked up in the warm-up, and Cristiano Ronaldo replaced him.
The Real Madrid connection
On the stroke of half-time, the Real Madrid connection of Casemiro and Cristiano combined to produce the goal which would later prove to be the winner for the Red Devils.
The holding midfielder robbed Iwobi of the ball just inside his own half and then split the Everton defence with a pinpoint through ball for Cristiano, who added the finishing touch to score the 700th club goal of his career.
The second period saw Marcus Rashford come closest to scoring and extending Manchester United's lead, though VAR intervened to rule out his goal for a handball in the build-up.
