Canelo will take a year off from fighting after deciding to undergo wrist surgery

Canelo Alvarez has decided to take a year off, as he will have wrist surgery and also wants to disconnect from boxing to get his body back to full strength after his most recent fight.

The Mexican star made clear that his next bout won't be before September 2023, thus ruling himself out for the Cinco de Mayo celebrations, a holiday for world boxing.

"After my daughter's 15th birthday party, I'm going to the United States," said the undisputed Super Middleweight World Champion.

The 32-year-old Mexican boxer defeated Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17 to put an end to the two men's trilogy after drawing with him in 2017 and beating him one year later.

"I have two other opinions from two doctors and we're going to see what's best for me and undergo surgery," Canelo noted.

Rematch with Bivol?

Rumors suggest that Canelo would seek a rematch with Dmitry Bivol at 175 pounds after the Russian defeated him in May in a WBA Semi-Complete Championship bout. That was the Mexican's second loss in his illustrious career as a professional boxer.
