Roger Federer vs. Rafa Nadal: Here's where their final battle could take place
Roger Federer recently announced his retirement from the sport of tennis after a 24-year career, saying his final official tournament will be the 2022 Laver Cup later this month.
With Federer' retirement, one of the greatest rivalries also comes to an end, but not before one final match.
Real Madrid is planning an exhibition match between Federer and Rafael Nadal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The newly-remodeled stadium would host the event in front of 80,000 fans, more than doubling the standing attendance record at a tennis match.
While there is not set date for the exhibition, further information is expected to be released after the Laver Cup at the O2 Arena in London.
Federer and Nadal at the Laver Cup
For now, Federer and Nadal will set their rivalry aside to join forces at the Laver Cup as part of Team Europe.
"The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event," Federer said. "I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but just not in Grand Slams or on the Tour."
During the three-day event, six of the best European tennis players take on six stars from the rest of the world, including American breakout star Frances Tiafoe.
Novak Djokovic will also be part of Team Europe at the Laver Cup, which kicks off September 23.
