Colin Kaepernick back with the 49ers: Is this possible?
Trey Lance underwent a successful surgery to repair his fractured right ankle and it is official that he will not return this season for the San Francisco 49ers, it is also known that as of now Jimmy Garoppolo, who was the starting quarterback in the last seasons, will take his place, however, it is not very clear who will take the backup spot left by Jimmy G.
It is impossible not to think of Colin Kaepernick when trying to link the words quarterback and San Francisco 49ers, especially if we consider that he is one of only four people in all of history who can boast of having taken this historic franchise to a Super Bowl, that the first two (Joe Montana and Steve Young) are retired Hall of Famers from the last millennium and that the other one is just Garoppolo.
Candidates to be Jimmy Garoppolo's backup
However, all indicators point to the fact that there is no chance of seeing Kaep on the 49ers roster again, given that San Francisco already made five workouts for the vacancy on the team left by Lance, they are Kurt Benkert, AJ McCarron, Garrett Gilbert, Kevin Hogan and Mike Glennon, this according to Mike Garofolo of NFL Network.
On top of all this, the 49ers have Brock Purdy on their depht chart, as you can see none of the last names here written on Kaepernick's, so he's not remotely an option for head coach Kyle Shanahan.
What's next for the San Francisco 49ers?
For the time being, the 49ers started the season with a 1-1 record, surprisingly lost their first game as visitors to the Chicago Bears by a score of 19-10, however, they took revenge just in the Week 2 game in which Lance was injured by beating the Seattle Seahawks at home by a score of 27-7 and will return to the playoffs on Sunday, September 25 when they visit Russell Wilson's Denver Broncos.
