Asensio: Playing for Barcelona? I can't give you an answer on that right now
Marco Asensio is at the centre of much media attention again this week, amplified by his Real Madrid contract coming to an end in June 2023.
The forward had offers to leave this past summer, but has stayed put at Real Madrid. Now his contract is unlikely to be renewed beyond the current campaign, and Barcelona are apparently considering making a move for him.
"I don't know if Barcelona want me, to be honest," Asensio told COPE's El Partidazo. "A lot of other clubs have come forward.
"So I haven't thought about it [joining Barcelona]. There are a lot of rumours and speculation, that's normal.
"In seven months I can sign for anybody, so it's normal for clubs to be mentioned, and many more no doubt will be.
"I haven't thought about Barcelona, I haven't evaluated it. So for now I can't give you an answer."
Part of the reason that Asensio remains at Real Madrid is coach Carlo Ancelotti, who spoke with the player in pre-season.
"August was difficult, it was strange," Asensio said. "But the decision was made and I'm very happy to be at Real Madrid.
"Ancelotti's confidence in me was key.
"I know I can help Real Madrid and I want to keep winning trophies with the club. I had offers, but at no time did I really think of leaving.??
"Ancelotti was key, and in the end I had a good time last season with goals and minutes played. Above all, because of the trophies we won. We have the same objectives this season."
Although his contract is unlikely to be renewed now, the forward hasn't ruled out staying put in the capital.
"We'll see what happens," Asensio said, asked about renewing. "You never know, in football things change very quickly.
"I can't tell you because I don't know what's going to happen."
