Charles Leclerc takes French F1 GP pole with help from Sainz
Charles Leclerc claimed his seventh pole position of the year at the French Grand Prix qualifying, although the Monegasque driver knows that he owes a lot to teammate Carlos Sainz for the win.
Sainz, who was issued a 10-place grid penalty, stayed on track just to assist Leclerc and it worked. In Q1, he got 0.008 on Max Verstappen and in the second, thanks to a masterful advance of the Spaniard to open the space in a key area of the track, left the Dutchman 0.304 behind.
Ferrari are working as a team, despite the struggles of Sainz this year. Carlos gave up setting any lap time to sacrifice himself for Leclerc, who is in need of points to cut Verstappen's 38-point lead. There are 11 races to go and Sainz is aiming for a comeback on Sunday.
For Leclerc, he knows he must take full advantage of his pole during Sunday's race to reduce the sizeable deficit.
Mercedes, despite its aerodynamic tweaks, still fell short of Checo Perez in qualifying. The Mexican showed up at the right time to close the door on Mercedes, clinching the final place on the podium.
