Alex Rodriguez congratulates best friend David "Big Papi" Ortiz for HOF induction
Boston Red Sox legend David "Big Papi" Ortiz was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York on Sunday and Alex Rodriguez was there to congratulate his best friend.
Rodriguez had never been to Cooperstown for the HOF ceremony but finally made the trip to see Ortiz's induction, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Ortiz, who made the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, helped the Red Sox win its first MLB title in 86 years in 2004, ending the "Curse of the Bambino."
Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees in that World Series and A-Rod was on the losing side.
The pair of best friends have been close since before becoming professionals but their on-field rivalry made their friendship taboo in a sense.
A-Rod, Big Papi are best friends
After each one retired, they joined forces on Fox Sports as analysts of the sport they played.
Rodriguez took to Instagram on Sunday to congratulate his co-worker with some kind words.
"Big Papi... A Hall of Fame player on the field. A Hall of Fame person off of it," Rodriguez wrote. "What a great honor to witness your induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame today. I'm proud to call you a brother and friend."
Big Papi played 14 of his 20 major league seasons with the Red Sox.
