Manny Machado injury update: Padres star out (VIDEO)
San Diego Padres star baseball player Manny Machado suffered a chilling ankle injury while trying to get to first base against the Colorado Rockies.
Padres fans held their collective breath as All-Star third baseman Manny Machado went down with what appeared to be a horrific ankle twist while trying to beat out a throw to first base.
Bad news for the Padres
According to MLB insider Hector Gomez, Machado was able to walk off the field with some help from San Diego's training staff while putting limited weight on the ankle.
Baseball fans reacted Sunday to Machado's nasty ankle injury. "Oh man, that looks gnarly," one user responded.
Manny Machado's great season
This is terrible news, especially considering the season the five-time All-Star is having in 2021.
Through 65 games, Manny Machado is batting a career-high .329 with 12 home runs, 46 RBIs, 17 doubles and seven stolen bases.
Machado, in the midst of a stellar season, stretched his left leg out toward home plate trying to beat pitcher Antonio Senzatela's throw in the first inning. Machado's heel appeared to slide off the top of the bag and he fell to the ground, his left leg buckling underneath him.
Unnecessary injury to Manny Machado
Team trainers came onto the field to tend to Machado as he was on the ground. He later sat up, but was unable to put weight on the injured leg.
Machado was helped to his feet and, with a trainer on either side, limped off the field and into the clubhouse for further examination. He was replaced in the lineup by Sergio Alcantara. Machado has been a mainstay in the Padres' strong start to the season, helping to make up for the absence of the injured Fernando Tatis Jr.
