Luka Doncic is the last man standing from this season's MVP race
Luka Doncic is now the last man standing from this season's MVP race after leading the Dallas Mavericks past Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns.
Doncic finished fifth in MVP voting, one spot behind Booker, who was the last domino to fall. The first to get eliminated was back-to-back MVP winner Nikola Jokic -- the Denver Nuggets fell to the Golden State Warriors in the First Round of the Western Conference.
NBA MVP Voting
1. Nikola Jokic (Denver) - 875 points
2. Joel Embiid (Philadelphia) - 706 points
3. Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee) - 595 points
4. Devin Booker (Phoenix) -216 points
5. Luka Doncic (Dallas) - 146 points
The rest of the players got eliminated in descending order, with Doncic taking care of sending Booker packing. Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers lost to the Miami Heat in six games and Giannis Antetokounmpo couldn't push the Milwaukee Bucks past the Boston Celtics.
Hours after Antetokounmpo and company lost Game 7, Booker had a disastrous night in Phoenix against Dallas. He and Chris Paul did not score a single field goal in the entire first half of Game 7.
Doncic, meanwhile, scored 27 points in the first two quarters, tying the entire Suns team at the break to help his side enter the third frame with a 30-point lead. Mavericks led by as many as 46 points and Doncic did not even play a single minute in the final stanza due to securing the victory by halftime.
MVP voting flaws
A lot has been said recently of how the MVP voting system is flawed. Players like Draymond Green have publicly stated that the media controlling the narrative of who wins the award for the best player in the league is not ideal.
Many different factors go into how the media votes for the season's MVP, but stats are what most voters use to decide their winner. With Jokic winning the award again this year despite the Nuggets being the No. 6 seed, questions of what the MVP criteria is have surfaced.
Some people believe the NBA Playoffs should also be a factor when deciding who wins the award, but others say that the Finals MVP is there for the best postseason player. Still, it's concerning that since the turn of the century only Shaquille O'Neal (2000), Tim Duncan (2003), Stephen Curry (2015) and LeBron James (2012 and 2013) have won the MVP award and the NBA title in the same season.
