Katie Meyer's death: Stanford soccer star's suicide confirmed

Just Wednesday it was reported that Stanford women's soccer teamgoalkeeper and captain Katie Meyer died, and now it has been revealed that the college star committed suicide.

This information was shared by California officials on Thursday, via a statement issued by Santa Clara County, which said that "Meyer's death was determined to be self-inflicted."

Rumors of suicide circulated after Meyer's death

"The Medical Examiner-Coroner extends sincest condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Katie Meyer," the officials added.

The death of Meyer, 22, occurred in a residence hall on campus, but the cause of death was not originally provided, although several online reports had already indicated that suicide was the cause of the janitor's death.

Meyer's family and friends devastated by her death

Meyer's family and friends, as well as the Stanford school and the world of sports in general, were shocked by the soccer player's death.

"There are no words," Katie's sister, Samantha Meyer, said in a social media post earlier this week. "Thank you for all the kindness extended to my family."

Meyer was an important piece in Stanford University's 2019 NCAA title win over North Caroline, saving two penalty kicks.

"Her friends describe her as a larger-than-life team player in all her pursuits, from choosing an academic discipline she said 'changed my perspective on the world and the very important challenges that we need to work together to overcome' to the passion she brought to the Cardinal women's soccer program and to women's sports in general," Susie Brubaker-Cole, vice provost for student affairs at Stanford, said in the statement.
