Southgate: Rooney would've been on the phone if I'd left Kane on any longer
Harry Kane scored four goals in England's 10-0 rout of San Marino on Monday, with the Tottenham man just five goals away from Three Lions all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney.
After the game, head coach Gareth Southgate joked that he substituted Kane to avoid any problems with Rooney.
"If we left him on another half an hour, we would have had Wayne Rooney's family on the phone," he told ITV.
"He is a phenomenal goalscorer, we wanted to give him the chance tonight and he took it well."
Kane scored a hat-trick in the previous game against Albania, and coupled with his four goals at San Marino, he ended the calendar year as England's top scorer with 16.
The Spurs striker is now on 48 senior international goals, while Rooney leads the list with 53.
His exploits against San Marino saw him draw level with former Tottenham and Barcelona striker Gary Lineker, and it seems like it is just a matter of time before he breaks Rooney's record.
