Liverpool Explosion: Who are the terrorists?

The taxi explosion outside Liverpool Women's Hospital just shy of 11am on Sunday morning has led to three men being arrested under the Terrorism Act, with one man having died as a result of the blast.

The event, which took place on Remembrance Sunday, saw the passenger in the taxi - who detonated the bomb - declared dead at the scene, while the taxi driver was able to get away to safety and is now in a stable condition in hospital.

As Sunday went on, there were raids carried out by armed officers on properties in Liverpool, specifically on Rutland Avenue near Sefton Park and around Sutcliffe Street and Boaler Street in Kensington.

Who has been arrested?

Greater Manchester Police, in conjunction with Merseyside Police, published a tweet on Sunday evening confirming that three men had been arrested under the Terrorism Act.

"Three men - aged 29, 26 and 21 - were arrested under the Terrorism Act after being detained in the Kensington area of the city," read a police statement.

"Officers from Counter Terrorism North West are leading the investigation, supported by Merseyside Police and security service, MI5.

"People detained under the Terrorism Act can be held without charge for up to 28 days."

Politicians' response

"My thoughts are with all those affected by the awful incident in Liverpool today. I want to thank the emergency services for their quick response and professionalism, and the police for their ongoing work on the investigation," tweeted Boris Johnson, the prime minister of the United Kingdom.

"My thoughts are with the people of Liverpool tonight following the explosion outside the city's Women's Hospital. Thank you to the emergency services who acted so swiftly," tweeted Keir Starmer, the leader of the opposition, the Labour Party.

"I am being kept regularly updated on the awful incident at Liverpool Women's Hospital. Our police and emergency services are working hard to establish what happened and it is right they are given the time and space to do so," tweeted Priti Patel, the home secretary of the United Kingdom.
