A thrashing that stains Mourinho's reputation
Roma suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat to Norwegian minnows Bodo Glimt in the Europa Conference League, in what was Jose Mourinho's joint biggest defeat of his illustrious career.
While the competition may not be of maximum importance to some of the bigger sides participating, the nature of the defeat is certain to put a stain on Mourinho's reputation.
Roma went into the break 2-1 down, having halved the deficit after a bright start from the hosts. Yet, in the second period, the floodgates opened as Roma's defence capitulated, bringing about quite a remarkable result.
Mourinho's anger
Mourinho didn't hide his frustrations at the full time whistle, taking the blame for his team selection but making it clear that the players had failed him.
"I decided to play with this line-up, so the responsibility is mine," he told Sky Sport Italia after the encounter.
"I did it with good intentions, to give an opportunity to those who work hard and to rotate the squad on a synthetic pitch in cold weather.
"I never disguised the fact we were a squad with real limitations. We have 13 players who represent one team, the others are on a different level.
"We lost against a team that showed more quality on the night. It's that simple."
Newcastle links
Mourinho had been linked with the head coach position at Newcastle in recent weeks, with the former Tottenham boss seen as an ideal candidate for the role, while he himself admitted that he had an 'emotional connection' with the club due to his close relationship with former Magpies legend Sir Bobby Robson.
While he clearly distanced himself from the position ahead of the game, the result could heap pressure on him, and accusations could be pointed at Mourinho over whether he was at all unsettled by the rumours.
Mourinho's biggest ever defeat
The 6-1 hammering at the hands of the Norwegian side is up there with Mourinho's worst ever defeat in his coaching career.
The only other result that saw him lose by five goals was the infamous 5-0 defeat to Barcelona while coach of Real Madrid in 2010 at the Camp Nou
